A special lecture on American Literature by Professor SanjuktaDasgupta was organized by the Department of English, the Bhawanipur Education Society College on 30.09.2019 from 11.00 a.m. to 1p.m. for the students of M.A English and third year English Honours.
An eminent scholar, critic, poet and translator, Professor Dasgupta has her specialization in American Literature.A recipientof the British Council Charles Wallace Scholar grant, a Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and an Associate Fellowship at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, Professor Dasgupta has taught at several foreign universities, for instance in Prague and Oxford, and was a visiting professor at the State University of New York in 2011.
Former faculty and Head of the Department of English, and also the Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Calcutta, Professor Dasgupta is presently the Convenor, English Advisory Board, SahityaAkademi, New Delhi; President, Executive Committee, Intercultural Poetry and Performance Library at ICCR, Kolkata and a Visiting Professor, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland (2018).
Her special lecture entitled ‘The Evolution of American Literature’ for the students at The Bhawanipur Education Society College traced the beginnings of American Literature from the 18th century, right upto the 21st century diasporic literature. Conversational and comprehensive, Professor Dasgupta’slecture familiarized the students with the diverse contexts, nuances and complexities involved in the understanding of American Literature. The lecture was a great success.It was attended by 92 students from the Department and was much appreciated by all of them. A record of the same has been maintained in the English Department.
