Objective of the Activity: To provide with foundational insights into the theory and applications of Fourier Series, enhancing understanding of mathematical tools used in signal processing, physics, and engineering.
Brief Description of the Activity: An invited academic talk titled “Introduction to Fourier Series” was successfully organized by the Department of Mathematics in collaboration with the Seminar Committee (Science Section) and in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of The BES College. This initiative was part of the department’s ongoing efforts to provide students and faculty with exposure to advanced mathematical concepts and their practical significance across various scientific domains.
The event was held on 12th July 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, in Room No. 528 of the college premises. The talk was delivered by Dr. Nantu Sarkar, an esteemed academician and Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcutta. With a strong research background and teaching expertise, Dr. Sarkar brought clarity and depth to the session through his engaging and structured presentation.
The primary objective of the lecture was to introduce the fundamental concepts and theoretical foundations of Fourier Series — a powerful mathematical tool used extensively in the analysis of periodic functions, signal processing, heat transfer, and numerous engineering and physics applications. Dr. Sarkar began by outlining the historical development of Fourier Series and then guided the audience through its mathematical formulation, convergence criteria, and illustrative examples.
The talk also included a discussion on how Fourier Series play a crucial role in transforming complex periodic data into simpler sine and cosine components, thereby making it easier to analyze and interpret.
