On 21st June, 2021, the Department of Sociology organised a Webinar on “Towards the ‘Sociology of Environment’ – A New Field of Enquiry”. Prof. (Dr) Amites Mukhopadhyay, Department of Sociology, Jadavpur University was invited to speak on this subject. Prof. Mukhopadhyay gave a detailed description on the development of this sub discipline, Sociology of Environment, and spoke in length how this specialised field of enquiry emphasises upon the interrelationship and interaction between human beings and the natural environment. He explained the relevance as well as the importance of studying and understanding the environment to enable human beings to act and react responsibly.
Prof Mukhopadhyay also touched upon the growing environmental concerns worldwide and suggested ways and methods that we as responsible citizens should incorporate in our lives. This was followed by a question answer round where the students asked questions dealing with various environmental issues and global concerns. Our speaker made sure each question was answered with facts and figures along with suitable examples.
Overall it was an extremely interesting and enriching experience that benefitted teachers, guests as well as students who attended the Webinar.
