“Discipline, Dedication, and Duty: The Pillars of an NCC Cadet’s Character”
The National Cadet Corps is the youth wing of the Indian armed forces, with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. This organisation is regulated under the Ministry of Defence and was established on July 16, 1948, to provide basic military training that inculcates a feeling of comradeship, courage, discipline, honesty, and above all, patriotism. BESC is affiliated with all three wings of NCC – Army, Navy, and Air force. On December 5th, 2023, the NCC Collective organised the 75th NCC day, the event was graced by Commanding Officer 31 Bengal Bn NCC, Colonel Rohit Sharma, Commanding Officer No 1 Bengal Air Sqn NCC, Wing Commander S. Selva Kumar VM, Commanding Officer No 2 Bengal Naval Unit NCC, Lieutenant Commander Nazir A. Aziz with their 1st ladies, our NCC Officers Lieutenant Aditya Raj, Aritrica Dubey, Abhishek Kumar Singh along with defence staff from all three units associated with BESC were our special guests for the event.
The event commenced with an opening speech by the Rector and dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah, who spoke about the achievements of our cadets, followed by the lighting of the lamp. On the eve of the NCC Day celebration, we also welcomed CO 31 Bengal and CO 2 Naval NCC as they have been posted to Bengal recently and visited our college for the first time. We invited Col Rohit Sharma, on stage to address our motivated cadets. He spoke about the life of an NCC cadet and that he was a NCC cdt. He is the epitome of how a cadet could go on to be the future of our nation. There was an introductory video of BESC NCC activities including the – Reach Out project during the COVID-19 outbreak, Swachch Bharat, Project Kartavya, and several other projects and campaigns also it included the achievements of our NCC cdts since the affiliation of NCC in the college.
After this, our cadets set the stage on fire with their brilliant dance performance on the theme “Unity in Diversity”, which we witness in all NCC camps as cadets from all over India participate there, and a strong sense of National Integration is developed.
To encourage the cadets with his kind words, we called upon the stage, Wing Cdr S. Selva Kumar (VM). His speech included a critical lesson and motivation for all of us: ‘There are four pillars governing an individual’s life: self-discipline, merit, hard work, and hope. If life is a car, then these are the four wheels of the car, and the lack of any one of these qualities makes the car unbalanced’. Just like Col Rohit Sharma, Selva sir was a NCC cadet and he also talked about the NCC Special entry schemes in which one having completed the 03 years NCC course and holding a C certificate with Alpha or Bravo grading is allowed to appear for the SSB interview directly, he also mentioned that he had joined the Indian Air Force – flying branch through the NCC special entry scheme. His words were truly motivational, and our cadets extended their interest in knowing more about the different entries of the Armed forces and how NCC certificates could come in handy for the same.
The cultural program was continued by a self-composed poem on “NCC – A Hero in Making” by Corporal Prince Mishra. To weave our words and emotions together, the next performance was a group song by the BESC cadets. After the soothing melody, we invited Lt. Cdr Nasir A. Aziz, to hype us up with his kind words. In his speech, he uncovered the truth about ‘An officer’s life is a choice of dignity over money’. He also spoke on the value of time and how our better can be turned into our best actions with time. He also shared his experience in the Indian Navy both as a sailor and an officer. After his encouraging words, to showcase the energy of our cadets, a Josh-type performance with backflips and somersaults took us all by surprise.
This was followed by the felicitation ceremony. The cadets who participated in All India Vayu Sainik Camp – Bengaluru, All India Nau Sainik Camp – INS Shiwaji, Lonavala, Maharashtra, Sailing Expedition – from Kolkata to Farakka and back besides several other camps and competitions, were all felicitated by Dean sir and the Commanding Officers and our NCC Officers, followed by the cake cutting ceremony and NCC song.
