William Shakespeare has remained one of the most popularly performed and adapted writers of all time. Be it theatre, film, opera, ballet or other modes of artistic representation, he has consistently fascinated students and performers including actors, musicians, directors, artists and dancers. People from all over the world have accepted Shakespearean literature as their mode of expression.
The Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society College takes immense delight in acquainting its students with Shakespeare through the regular university curriculum but also feels it necessary to help them understand that Shakespeare is not simply meant to be read, but to be performed. With this in mind, the department feels that restricting Shakespeare studies to the classroom would essentially neglect a significant proportion of material necessary for the proper understanding of how to appreciate staging and performance of Shakespearean plays.
The college is going to host an International Shakespeare Festival 2016. A three day long Shakespeare seminar and workshop has been planned in the college premises. The Festival invites Shakespeare scholars, researchers and performers to share their understanding of the dramatist through audio- visual and paper presentations.
The festival will also include a three day theatre workshop where students of The Bhawanipur Education Society College will be trained by internationally acclaimed Shakespeare actor, director and scholar Professor Ronan Paterson, (Head of Performing Arts, School of Arts and Media, Teesside University, U.K) and Professor Amitava Roy (President, Shakespeare Society of Eastern India) on “Performing Shakespeare.”
