The Peer webinars are a unique monthly endeavour by the Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society. The primary objective for initiating and curating such a unique exertion is to create an exposure for students and inspire them for research and higher education. The Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society College organized Peer Seminar Chapter: 15 on 30th January, 2023 at 7:00 PM. The speaker was Mr. Sayan Chatterjee; his paper was entitled- “Subject-Object Constitution in Pre-Raphaelite Compostions: Binary or Hierarchy?” The seminar was attended by the faculty members and the students from PG Semesters I and III of the Department of English.
Mr. Chatterjee’s paper explored the subject-object relationship in five selected Pre-Raphaelite paintings. It went on to establish how the subject (the literary characters) existed in complementary relation to the objects in the paintings and hence concluded that their relationship is not hierarchical. It also explored the scope of distinguishing between two paradigms of representations to find out whether both focus on the meaning of the subject and it also tried to explicate the binary of independence of “painting” and autonomy of “rendition.”
The session ended with a discussion and questions from the students which helped them to understand and explore several theories related to art and literature
