The Department of Commerce (Morning), in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organised an International Seminar on “Role of Academia in Contemporary Times” on December 19, 2025, to deliberate upon the evolving responsibilities of academic institutions in a rapidly transforming global environment. The seminar brought together academicians, industry leaders, and thought leaders to engage in meaningful discussions on education, technology, culture, and institutional collaboration.
The seminar commenced with a solemn inaugural session that set the tone for the day’s deliberations. The inaugural address reflected upon academia as one of the enduring pillars of society, emphasizing its evolving role in addressing contemporary challenges. The ceremonial lamp lighting, accompanied by the devotional tune of “Vaishnav Jan To”, symbolised the values of empathy, humility, and selfless service, followed by offerings to Goddess Saraswati, invoking blessings for wisdom and learning.
The inaugural session was enriched by insightful addresses from distinguished speakers.
The Rector and Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Dilip Shah, highlighted the rapid changes shaping the world today and the consequent need for methodological transformation in education. He emphasized the institution’s efforts in fostering learning beyond conventional barriers and underlined the importance of academic collaborations through MoUs and MoIs in strengthening educational ecosystems.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Mr. Madan Mohanka, Chairman of Tega Industries, who stressed the importance of equality, inclusivity, and long-term national vision. Referring to India’s journey towards 2047, he advocated a holistic approach to development that goes beyond traditional economic indicators such as GDP, incorporating measures like happiness and well-being. He also emphasized the need to create job creators rather than job seekers, reinforcing the role of academia in nation-building.
The Guest of Honour, H.G. Acharya Ratna Das, Chairman of ISKCON New Town, began his address with a prayer and reflected on the teachings of the Vedas. He eloquently discussed the paradox of change and continuity, stating that while circumstances evolve, core values remain constant. Highlighting the growing stress and anxiety associated with conventional education, he described such knowledge as “Avidya” and advocated the pursuit of true knowledge that nurtures wisdom, balance, and character.
A landmark event of the seminar was the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with six reputed institutions, namely Umesh Chandra College, Sivanath Sastri College, Seth Anandram Jaipuria College, Calcutta Business School, NSHM Knowledge Campus, and City College of Business Administration. These collaborations aim to promote academic exchange, research cooperation, and institutional development, marking a significant step towards strengthening inter-institutional partnerships.
