The Department of Geography of The Bhawanipur Education Society College organized a special lecture on the theme “Bridging Heritage and Ecology of Kolkata” on 06.05.2025 from 11 am – 1 pm at the Society Hall. The objective of the lecture was to delve into the interconnectedness between Kolkata’s historical heritage and its ecological framework, promoting a holistic understanding of urban sustainability in the context of one of India’s oldest metropolitan cities.
The two distinguished speakers for the event were – Dr. Debika Banerji (Assistant Professor, Milli Al-Ameen College for Girls) and Mr. Rangan Datta (Travel blogger and columnist). The lecture was attended by 39 participants, including undergraduate students and faculty members from the various departments. The session began with a brief welcome address and an introduction of the speakers by Ms. Atrayee Biswas, followed by the felicitation of the speakers by Prof. Debjani Ganguly, Vice-Principal (Arts).
Dr. Debika Banerji delivered a lecture on the topic “How Cultural Landscapes are shaped by myths and memories: Adi Ganga and its significance in defining the geographies of the city of Calcutta” and discussed the historical development of Kolkata, emphasizing the city’s evolving ecological systems and their significance in the context of urban planning and heritage conservation. Mr. Rangan Datta delivered a lecture on the topic “Biodiversity Tourism in Kolkata and surroundings” including a visual journey through the different plant and bird species found in the city thereby, highlighting the delicate balance between preservation and modernization.
Both presentations were well-received, sparking thought-provoking discussions and interactive Q&A sessions. Participants expressed an interest in understanding the role of geography in heritage conservation and environmental stewardship. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Uttiya Chattopadhyay, acknowledging the valuable contributions of the speakers and the enthusiastic participation of the attendees.
The special lecture successfully met its objective of raising awareness about the importance of integrating heritage conservation with ecological sustainability in Kolkata. It served as an engaging academic platform for students to explore interdisciplinary themes and enhanced their understanding of the city’s complex identity. The Department of Geography aims to continue organizing such intellectually enriching events to broaden students’ academic horizons and civic consciousness.
