Objective of the event: All-round development of the personality of the students which includes academic excellence as well as the spirit of punctuality, discipline, leadership and teamwork.
Brief description of the event: The Department of Political Science organised a Prize Distribution Ceremony on December 16, 2024, for the Semester V Honours students, to recognise their achievements in all types of academic and disciplinary activities during the semester. This ceremony is based upon the various Academic and Disciplinary measures introduced by the Department for the overall development of the students, not only in academics but in various other fields.
The proceedings of the prize distribution ceremony were conducted by Amala Dhandhania, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science. She explained the parameters of the Academic and Disciplinary Measures on which the students were judged and awarded. She also mentioned how this endeavour has successfully created an environment of discipline and a zeal for learning and believes that this will motivate the students to perform better in future. The Vice Principal (Arts) Prof. Debjani Ganguly graced the occasion and felicitated the winning students, praising the department for undertaking such an effort of awarding the students for academics and extracurricular activities and also encouraged the students to continue with such performances in a consistent manner.
The following prizes and recognitions were given out:
The highest Class Attendance (based on all four Honours papers of CC11, CC12, DSE-A1 and DSE-B1) was won by Krittika Nandi;
The prize for Best Performer in Continuous Internal Assessment was won by Sudeshna Jha;
The prize for Best Daily Individual Class Performance where +1 is given for daily responses in class and for attentiveness; a record of the students is also kept for getting -1 for late coming and indiscipline was won by Manu Kumar Gupta;
The prize for Second Best Daily Individual Class Performance was won by Pratyay Basu;
The appreciation prize for Extra-curricular activity was won by Krittika Nandi;
The prizes for the Highest and Second Highest Score in the University of Calcutta BA Semester IV Honours in Political Science, 2024: Ankit Kumar Gupta with an SGPA of 7.388 and Manu Kumar Gupta with an SGPA of 7.383 , respectively;
The prize for securing 1st position in Academic Quiz was won by Manu Kumar Gupta and for 2nd Position in Academic Quiz was won by Sudeshna Jha;
The Best Group (students are divided into six groups), which is a prize decided on the basis of various parameters which include the Percentage of Attendance in Continuous Internal Assessments, Continuous Internal Evaluations, Mentoring, Doubt-Clearing sessions, Student’s Seminar and Assignment Submissions. This prize was won by Group A led by the Group Representative, Pratyay Basu.
Outcome of the event: The outcome of the event based on the students’ feedback is quite positive. Students expressed satisfaction with the current criteria and appreciated the initiative by the department. Some students requested more recognition for specific activities. The event, based on the Academic and Disciplinary Measures of the department throughout the semester, seems to have motivated students to continually perform better and encouraged more active participation in classes; through healthy competition among individuals and groups.
