“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
– William Shakespeare
Known for talented actors, scriptwriters and performers, the Theatre Collective of The Bhawanipur Education Society College, Enact, presented a compelling stage production called “The Perfect Crime” an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s bestseller “And Then There Were None.” Two shows were held for the same, one at 12:00 P.M. and the other at 5:00 P.M. on November 14, 2024, in the Jubilee Hall of the college campus that hosted not just the members of the collective but students across all streams, various theatre enthusiasts and thriller storytelling aficionados. The Collective Art-In-Me decorated the hall perfectly to serve the aesthetic required for a genre like this with background scores and lighting seamlessly complementing it.
“The Perfect Crime” followed the core premises of And Then There Were None with the plot revolving around ten people accused of major crimes they assumed were long buried but much to their misfortune, ended up resurfacing as a result of which they were held hostage without the presence of the host, forced to either dismiss or justify their actions. During their attempts to prove themselves innocent, they witness the death of each hostage one after another which makes them realise the gravity of the situation after all. The plot concludes with a clever twist where one of the hostages seems to be the mastermind behind a well-calculated plan. The adaptation, however, succeeded in incorporating contemporary elements making it relevant for the audience while exploring themes of guilt, deceit and justice.
Each cast member delivered a powerful performance and successfully commanded the stage at some point or another with their intense monologues and thought-provoking dialogues. The complexity of each character unfolded gradually layer by layer, keeping the audience captivated and hooked to the play throughout. To the audience’s delight, our Rector and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah announced plans for similar productions – this time with much more grandeur and dynamism which has already ignited enthusiasm across the campus. The production was directed by Mr. Apratim Chatterjee and the script and production design was handled by Mr. Paleshh Chaturvedi. The event was graced by Mr. Janardan Ghosh as the chief guest and Mr. Suprovo Tagore as the special guest. The cast consisted of the enact repertory as follows:
Nikhil Jaiswal as Ex-General Sukhveer Singh Rathore, Shinjita Ghosh as Vera, Lakshya Sharma as Parth Luthra, Satyam Singh as Vazir Badgami, Dhruv Hans as Kabir Singh, Ishaan Ghosh as Mr. Thomas Rogers, Ihina Chakraborty as Mrs. Emily Rogers, Sukriti Joshi as Justice Meera, Arpita Shaw as Savitri, Swagata Choudhury as Narayan, Adrian Ho as Dr. Atmaram Shinde and Akash as the dancer with Sujal Singh handling the technical aspects. The production received a well-deserving response from the audience each time, making their immense effort and dedication worthwhile.
