We are all well aware of the effects of Covid-19 that is spreading like a wildfire, worldwide. The world has come to a standstill and it has left all the countries paralyzed. This pandemic has left everyone helpless starting from the poor to the ministers who are incapable of holding up the country’s shattering economy. The pandemic and especially the lockdown have devastated the economy and left the poor far behind. The COVID-19 catastrophe is now largely seen as the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression.
The lockdown has made most of the middle class families suffer financial struggles and cutting down their monthly budgets and if we start talking about the conditions of the poor and daily wage-earners then it would be very difficult for us to articulate their miserable conditions into a paragraph. Our government, NGOs and many other institutions have come forward to help the people in need and so has The Bhawanipur Education Society College. It was a great initiative taken by the BESC, Prof. Dilip Shah with the event coordinator, Ms. Gargi (one of our faculty) arranged for ration for the impoverished in the interiors of Bosepukur. The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of our college organized this drive and distributed 80 packets of dal, rice, potato and onion on 6th April 2020. Many volunteers came forward and bought 100 kgs of rice and 60 kgs of dal and distributed the packets to the poor along with dry vegetables like, onions and potatoes. The motive of this drive was to reach out to the people in need and provide them with food but the motive will completely be fulfilled if other institutions step out and help, to reduce the hunger of the poor. This compassionate initiative by the college to help the poor and the daily wage-earners who have no income right now was indeed praiseworthy.
We should all, who are privileged enough, come out and help the needy at least with the basics, like, food. Seeing people die out of hunger is very despairing and the pandemic and the deadly cyclone has widened the gap between the rich and the poor. The damage to health, wealth and well-being has been enormous. “No one has ever become poor by giving.”
