A very comprehensive module designed with basic skills that teachers would require to structure mentoring initiatives at the Bhawanipur College, evolve as a mentor with growth mind set, develop rapport with students, and skills of, empathetic listening, attending, assertive communication , non-judgemental approach, unconditional positive regard and resilience was conducted by Ummeed Foundation.
The 75 hours certification course began in the month of January’ 2022 where 22 faculty members were oriented with popularly used theories for behavioural change as CBT, ACT therapy and Mindfulness with both online and offline sessions by counsellors.
With this skill training they would be able to understand adolescent needs, their emotional distress, post pandemic even more critical mental and emotional wellbeing support desired and they will see themselves equipped to handle these situations.
The case analysis and observation method adopted helped participant know the red flag of Depression, addiction, self-harm, suicidal tendency in particular and refer them to experts.
This certification made educators on campus provide an emotional first aid kit .
Participants were given individual exposure and participate in group activities to have first-hand experience of mentoring -counselling process and develop insight into the skills required to use mentoring counselling with students.
The Felicitation ceremony of ”Basic Mentoring Counselling Skills for Educators” by UMMEED, was held on 14.06.22. Twenty two lecturers from different departments were felicitated with certificates, scarves & mementos, by the founder, director of UMMEED, Ms. Salony Priya.
The welcome speech was given by De. Dyuti Chatterjee & the course overview was given by the team UMMEED.
Dr. Pinki Saha Sardar, welcomed and thanked all the dignitaries present and the college management for their continuous encouragement & full financial & technical support in sponsoring the entire course.
A teacher’s role is not merely confined to teaching curriculum. Teachers have to coach the students, nurture them, guide them & above all make them capable to take charge of their lives and become socially productive individuals. Each student is unique with his own thought process, aspirations, issues & mind blocks. It is by way of mentoring & counselling them, the talent & abilities of each child can be brought about.
Course insight & experiences were shared by few participating teachers, who highlighted the need & importance of this course for every teacher who by default must play the role of mentors to the students.
Prof. Dilip Shah, addressed the gathering, congratulating the participants and the team UMMEED for having successfully completed the six months long program. He also advised to come up with more of such enlightening workshops for teachers. The program ended with hi tea.
