An Industrial visit to “Bowreah Jute Mills Pvt. Ltd.”, Bauria, and Howrah was organized by the Management Department of The Bhawanipur Education Society College on Thursday, 22nd August 2019. Fifty-seven second-year BBA students, organisers and two faculties visited to Bowreah Jute Mills to interact with the Jute Industry and to understand the production, operations management, workings, HR policies etc. Students were eager for the visit since a Jute Mill visit was an unconventional one.
We reported at the college campus by 7AM, and began the trip at 7:30AM. Upon reaching the mill, we assembled in a staff training room and were offered refreshments. The Chief Executive of Works, Mr PK Biswas was felicitated along with a memento by Professor Kaushik Banerjee. We thanked him for giving us this opportunity and fulfilling his Corporate Social Responsibility. Hereafter, we were divided into batches of 20 and allotted an operations manager of the mill to guide us through the visit.
The visit began with a brief introduction to the age-old mill. Bowreah Jute Mills formerly known as North Mill was established in 1914 and spreads across 70-acre, providing employment to over 6000 people. The manager then introduced us to Jute as a biodegradable and future product with no occupational diseases and hence a healthy work environment. We began with the first phase where the raw material is segregated into batches and combed through and through. Next, its wound and spun, producing Yarn. Which is then sold or proceeds to the next step of weaving where cloth is made? And it further leads to the final phase, finishing where Jute Bags are produced. We saw a huge consignment from the Government of Haryana which was under process and realised how vast the Jute Industry is. The curious students asked their questions about managing such a huge workforce, the skilled labour, operations; and were thoroughly answered.
Following this, the tour concluded with all the three batches gathering again in the same training room and Professor Banerjee shared his thoughts and knowledge with us. We thanked the management of Bowreah Jute Mills once more for taking out their valuable time and showing us around.
We then moved to the nearby river bank of the Hooghly where we cooled off and shared our views with each other. The visit wrapped up by 11AM with the distribution of food packets by the Mill and we headed back to college.
All in all, this industry visit was a success and we had insights watching on-field management and relating it with what we have read in books and learnt in classes.
