All of us face problems in our daily lives that lead some to find unique and innovative solutions to address the same issues. It has been a recurrent phenomenon throughout history, where people would capitalise on such solutions, called social entrepreneurship. Startups nowadays most often follow the model of social entrepreneurship, for it is both beneficial for them commercially and socially.
The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised its first edition of “Kaun Jitega Spark Tank” on the 5th of May 2025, to inculcate the practice of generating ideas and to act upon them in order to turn them into successful business ventures. The event had a similar format to the famous business reality series of “Shark Tank”, and mainly focused on providing a platform for students to challenge themselves while letting their brains run free in the commercial world to present their ideas that were a solution to many daily problems, along with how to commercialise the ideas.
The event started with a motivating speech from the Rector and Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dilip Shah, who used examples of Gautam Adani and certain alumni of the college to motivate and encourage students to perform their best. He went on to mention how a certain chocolate business, starting from our college, found its way to success from the very institution that proved to be its brainchild. He ended his speech by wishing the participants the best of luck and thus kicking off the event. His speech was followed by the introduction of the judges’ panel, which consisted of Mr. Suchinto Tarafdar, Associate Director, Brand & Marketing; Mr. Aloke Majumder, VP of Technology at Hoichoi TV; Prof. Sankha Acharya, Founder of Two Pi Aar; and Prof. Mahesh Hathiramani, Entrepreneur and Guest Faculty at the Department of BBA at The BESC.
The rules stipulated that each team, comprising a maximum of 4 and a minimum of 2 members, was required to prepare a presentation in advance addressing any social problems for which they could provide solutions. The presentations had to include the problem statement, the solutions they offer, and what their business model would be based on, including a business plan, budget, target customers, their predictions of future performance, and a risk analysis. The basic thought was to sell a legit business plan to the judges, who were referred to as ‘Sharks’.
The presentations started one by one, where each presenter, along with their team, was given five minutes to present and one minute to answer the questions of the judges, who asked further details and provided feedback. The presentations included a wide array of problems with equally diverse and unique solutions to them. The many solutions that were presented included customizable idols, cutlery from unburnt waste crop stubble, water solutions, recycling jeans, a healthy food chain, etc. Ideas of all sorts exploded all over the Concept Hall and the judges kept marking each performance based on their visual material, way of presenting, demeanour, overall presence of mind and most importantly, their answers.
As the presentations came to an end, the sharks, visibly amazed, started comparing scores to finally decide the winner. The sharks then, one by one, got on the podium to share their thoughts on the event and also to share a few words for future budding entrepreneurs. “A businessman turns an idea into a business, an entrepreneur creates that idea” is what Prof. Sankha Acharya quoted, with almost all the sharks sharing one common statement of “Amazing event to inspire young minds, hope to see some ideas become reality soon!”
Following their kind words, the event finally came to an end by announcing the winners. Recognised and awarded by all the sharks, the winner was Team STUBBLE-UP (Agricultural Waste), with all team members being in semester 4, namely Bakshish Singh, Shreyan Majhi and Devansh Kapoor. Coming up as the 1st Runners-Up was Team GEN JEANS, with all team members being in semester 2, namely Rishi Singh, Shreya Malhotra, Tisha Shah, Harshita Rathi, and Pranavi Parekh; while the 2nd Runners-Up was Team KHAAS CRAVE with all team members being in semester 6, namely Satyam Kumar Agarwal, Mahi Alam, Simran Bharti, and Samar Pratap. Among the winning titles was the award of Best Presenter, which was bagged by Bakshish Singh of the winning team.
