a group of twenty-seven final semester students of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, accompanied by five teachers of the department, embarked on an educational trip to the enchanting hill station of Darjeeling. The purpose of the trip was to provide the students with a knowledge of the unique cultural and historical aspects of the region. The journey started from Howrah station where the group boarded the Vande Bharat Express which took them to New Jalpaiguri station. From there, they travelled by car and arrived in Darjeeling by the evening after a scenic journey through winding roads and lush tea gardens.
The first day of the trip began with a visit to the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Museum in Mongpu which showcases an extensive collection of Rabindranath Tagore’s works, including scripts, poems, and stories. On their return journey, they visited Ghum monastery. Later that day, the group also went to Batasia Loop which offers a panoramic view of Darjeeling and the Peace Pagoda. The day concluded with a visit to the Mall Road. The students engaged in discussions with residents, gaining insights into their way of life, challenges, and aspirations. This community interaction fostered a sense of cultural exchange and broadened the students’ perspectives.
On the second day, the group went to Kalimpong and visited the house where Rabindranath Tagore stayed during his visit to Kalimpong. While returning to Darjeeling, the group went to Tinchuley Tea Gardens. On the final day, the group ventured to places outside Darjeeling, such as Lepchajagat forest, Indo-Nepal border, the Pashupati market in Nepal and Mirik Lake on way to their return journey to New Jalpaiguri. The group spent the night at New Jalpaiguri and boarded the Shatabdi Express to return to Kolkata.
The educational trip to Darjeeling proved to be a well-rounded experience, seamlessly integrating environmental awareness, and cultural exploration. The students not only gained knowledge in a practical setting but also developed a sense of appreciation for the unique heritage and challenges faced by communities in the Himalayan region.
With the phenomenal changes in educational and information technology, the role of a teacher has undergone dramatic changes. He/she is expected to possess skills and abilities to plan the curriculum, make rational use of the media technology, and design an assessment strategy. This is possible only through a systematic approach to faculty development.
