On 15th August 1947, the flag of Independent India flared free in the air for the first time, rejoicing Independence with Indians who had awaited this day for more than two hundred years. The shackles of brutal oppression of the British Raj, which had captivated us into the dungeon of colonialism and slavery, were now broken forever. Every year since then, Independence Day is celebrated as a tribute to all those Freedom Fighters and Soldiers who selflessly sacrificed their lived for the safety and freedom of India.
Without submitting to the fear of Covid-19, The Bhawanipur Education Society College celebrated the 74th Independence Day virtually, maintaining the excitement of the day. The entire program was beautifully hosted by Prof Meenakshi Chaturvedi who described the event as an event of events. The celebration begun with the Indian Flag being hoisted by Prof. Dilip Shah accompanied by other college faculty. This was followed by a glimpse into previous years’ celebration. And blessings from the Chairman Shri Champak Lal Doshi, Teacher In-Charge, Dr Suchandra Chakravarty and Director General, Dr Suman K Mukerjee and the program proceeded.
The struggle for freedom was not easy. Many Indians sacrificed their lives in the hope to set India free from the inhuman clutches of British Raj. One such group of young men were Binoy-Badal-Dinesh, who in 1930 attacked the Writers’ Building as a revolt against Col. NS Simpsons. Simpsons was the Inspector General of prison who meted out brutal oppression to Indian prisoners. Students from the ENACT Collective paid a tribute to them with an overwhelming live performance. This was followed by a mesmerising musical tribute by CRESENDO Collective and a dance tribute by FLAMES Collective. The program concluded with a word of gratitude by Prof Dilip Shah. He proudly announced the formation of the EMERGENCY Group who have reached out to the elderly in such testing times and also how the NSS Collective has been distributing food, sanitizers and masks to the needy. The Bhawanipur College has set another example of selflessness by preparing audiobooks for the blind which will soon be distributed in blind schools of Kolkata.
Even today, every Indian is moved to tears getting reminded of the struggle and sacrifice of our Freedom Fighters. In this program, The Bhawanipur College pays its tribute to all those freedom fighters, soldiers and farmers who have toiled for our Mother Land.
