Room no 420. November 25th and 26th, 2019. Charcoal art has not only been an extremely popular medium of expressing an artist’s feelings but is also one that has a huge following around the world. Even the great Michelangelo has been credited with a number of pieces in which he had extensively used charcoal to give vent to his creative urges.
The reason for the popularity of charcoal as a medium are not hard to guess – it is relatively easy to use, takes much lesser time as opposed to other mediums like oil on canvas for example and the results are immediate. Besides, the final look is, more often than not, impressive.
The Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC), which has made it de rigueur to provide students opportunities of every conceivable manner to expand their horizons organised a workshop on Charcoals for the budding artists from within the student community. The workshop was conducted by noted artist and an ace exponent of charcoal art, Shantanu Chatterjee.
As many as thirty students participated in the workshop.
The two-day workshop was broken into two sessions with the first day being dedicated to an introductory talk on art by the speaker after which the students were exposed to some elementary sketching techniques.
On the second day, the students were introduced to the exciting world of charcoals as the master handheld the students and helped them embrace various nuances of charcoal art. Different techniques were also explained to them in detail. Work of each student was discussed and ways of improvement spelt out.
“This has been a high point in my campus life” gushed a student who had attended the workshop “we got to learn so many things about the art form and I would like to thank the college for providing us with this unique opportunity”.
Prof Dilip Shah, the dean of student affairs of the college felicitated the speaker on behalf of the college and expressed the hope that the attending students would put the learnt skills to take their creativity forward.
