Bhawanipur Education Society College recently arranged a seminar on “Data Analytics” on August 8, 2019 in which the “Society Hall” was agog with about 130 students from all the divergent streams such as BBA, BA, B.SC, B.Com departments. The seminar started with a definition and challenges in BIG DATA followed by the required skill set to solve these challenges. The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Dilip Shah was asked to come up on the podium and commence the seminar with some of his significant words.
To spin the wheel of the seminar, Mrigank Agarwal, a 3rd year student of BSC Economics Honours, introduced the main speaker, Dr. Shirish C Jeble who is a faculty of data analytics, IT and operations at ICFAI Business school, Pune. 26 years of practical work experience of both industry and academics, helped him establish himself as an eminent person in his field. Professional experience includes working in India and overseas at leading multinational companies such as OTIS, ISRC, BAXTER INC, DTI INS, Associated cement Companies( ACC). Some of his publications are- International Journal of logistics Management, 29 (2), 513 – 538, International Journal of Agricultural Resources, Governance and Ecology, 14(4), 338 – 351.
Having been introduced to the crowd, he started his speech quoting Economic Times of India “The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data”. A century ago, the resource in question was oil. Now similar questions are being raised by the giants that deal in data, the oil of the digital era. He went on explaining data analytics which basically analyses data using statistical techniques to provide actionable insights lending to business decision and whenever some knowledge is extracted from data is known as Data Science. In 1950 Walmart used to be the first to analyse the use of data but they lacked growth and the dearth was filled up by Amazon which entered the market in 1996 and took away the total sales of millions of companies as they identified the use of data science and predicted the market for e-commerce.
On the basis of Dr Shirish C Jeble’s extraordinary discourse on Data Analytics, next was the time for some quick review. An open house quiz contest was organised and winners were distributed with 220 dairy milks. At the end of the seminar, a test was also taken consisted of 15 questions each carrying 5 marks. Certificates of participation were given to all who willingly participated and the winners respectively 1st, 2nd and 3rd shall receive certificates of merit eventually. The ambience pleased Dr Shirish C Jeble who congratulated all the students for displaying such a keen interest to grow and develop. With a vote of thanks the seminar came to its conclusion with Professor Dilip Shah presenting Dr Shirish C Jeble a memento as a token of appreciation.
