Department of Mathematics, The Bhawanipur Education Society College hosted a webinar entitled “The Sky and Beyond” on 23.06.2020 during 03.00 – 05.00 PM. Dr. Debiprasad Duari, Director, Research & Academics, M. P. Birla Planetarium (Kolkata) was the invited speaker for the event. The event began with a short introduction of Dr. Duari who is an astrophysicist of international repute, a fellow of Royal astronomical society and a member of International Astronomical Union.
In his lecture, Dr. Duari gave a brief overview on the contemporary astronomical research. He explained several astronomical theories including change of seasons, total solar eclipse, and collision ejection theory which describes the origin of Moon. He also discussed about the missions of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Chandrayaan 2 (2019), Gaganyaan (2021), Mangalyaan 2 (2022) and Shukrayaan (2023). In course of his presentation, Dr. Duari exhibited some rare images of astronomical events and objects which would be otherwise impossible for a common man to access. In particular, he shared with the audience the images of the Chandrayaan 2, Gaganyaan, Mangalyaan 2, Shukrayaan, total eclipse, solar corona, successful entry of MOM to Martian orbit, visible layer of Sun to name a few. Dr. Duari encouraged the youngsters from all fields of Science to come forward and opt astrophysical research as a career option.
Several participants took part in this webinar most of whom are students and teachers of colleges and universities. They posed several questions during the interactive session before Dr. Duari all of which were nicely addressed by him. The webinar ended with the vote of thanks and a short speech delivered by Dr. Suchandra Chakravarty, the Teacher-in-Charge of the college.
