Category of the Activity (EXTENSION/OUTREACH/ENVIRONMENTAL): Outreach Organising unit: NSS Date/duration of the activity: 25.03.2025 to 29.03.2025 Time: 5am-10am No. of Participants: 13 No. of Beneficiaries: 1392
Objective of the event: The main goal of “Jal Se Jeevan” was to spread awareness about saving water, especially in summer when water shortage is common. The initiative aimed to educate people in slum areas about the importance of using water wisely and not wasting it. Efforts were also made to assist residents by fixing leaking or broken taps to prevent water wastage. The team assured residents that if such issues were identified, arrangements for a plumber would be made to repair them. This event encouraged small steps to save water, emphasizing that every drop matters.
Brief description of the event: The campaign was led by Shyam Sarraf, who, along with a dedicated team, carried out the initiative over five days in different areas, interacting with residents and spreading awareness about the responsible use of water. On the first day, a visit was made to Chakraberia Rd, Paddapukur, Bhowanipur, where families were informed about the need to conserve water, especially during the summer months. Stickers were placed outside houses as a part of the campaign to reinforce the message. The second day focused on Ward no. 69, Garcha Ballygunge, where efforts continued by asking residents if they had any leaking or broken taps and noting down their addresses in a notepad. Each day, a different area was covered, including the slums in Kalighat on the third day and Girish Park and Paddapukur on the fourth, ensuring that more households were reached. During interactions, homes with water leakage issues were identified. Many residents expressed concerns about broken taps, and assurance was given that help would be provided. On the fifth and final day, all previously visited areas were revisited, this time accompanied by plumbers. Referring to the recorded addresses, plumbers were guided to the houses where repairs were required. The plumbers efficiently fixed leaking or broken taps, helping to prevent unnecessary water wastage.
Outcome of the event: A total of 10,000 houses were covered during the campaign, and 1,392 stickers were placed outside homes to spread awareness.
