The Department of Commerce (Morning) at The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised an industrial visit to Shyam Sel and Power Limited, Pakuria Plant, Howrah, on 29 August 2026, as part of the WOW series, held every Saturday. The visit was attended by 33 students across different semesters, accompanied by Prof. Vanita Sharma and Prof. Pratap Chandra Das. The initiative aimed to provide students with practical exposure to a modern aluminium manufacturing facility and help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industrial practices.
The college bus departed from the campus at approximately 9:30 A.M., and the group returned safely at around 3:00 P.M.
The visit began with an informative session conducted by Mr. Ranjan Jha, Deputy Manager, Accounts, who introduced the students to the company’s operations, products, markets and distribution network. He also interacted with the students and addressed their questions, making the session both informative and engaging.
This was followed by a session on workplace safety conducted by Mr. Malay Chakraborty, Safety Head. The students were familiarised with the safety measures and protocols followed within the facility, highlighting the importance of discipline and strict adherence to safety procedures in an industrial environment.
The students then proceeded on a guided tour of the aluminium manufacturing facility. An Assistant Engineer, supported by the Quality Controller and Floor In-Charge, explained the various stages of production. Students observed the journey of the product from raw materials through manufacturing and quality control to its eventual distribution.
One of the key highlights of the visit was the extensive use of automation and modern machinery. Students gained a practical understanding of how technology contributes to productivity, precision, consistency and operational efficiency in large-scale manufacturing.
The visit also provided insights into the company’s export-oriented operations. Students learnt that approximately 60% of the specialised aluminium foil production is exported, offering them a glimpse into the organisation’s international market presence and distribution activities.
Another important learning area was hazardous waste management. The students were introduced to the regulatory permissions and systems involved in the proper handling and management of industrial waste. This helped them understand the importance of environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance in modern manufacturing.
The industrial visit enabled students to gain practical exposure to manufacturing, automation, quality control, workplace safety, distribution, exports and environmental management. Observing these functions first-hand helped them connect theoretical concepts from their commerce curriculum with real-world applications.
The visit concluded as an enriching and educational experience, giving students a broader understanding of how a modern industrial organisation operates.
