The Department of Commerce (Morning) at Bhawanipur Education Society College organised an industrial visit to Dabur India Limited, Narendrapur Unit, Kolkata, on 29 August 2026. The visit was undertaken for 24 B.Com. (Morning) students, accompanied by faculty members, with the objective of providing students with first-hand exposure to the functioning of a large manufacturing organisation.
The visit provided an opportunity for students to look beyond classroom learning and understand how different departments work together in an actual industrial environment. The students were introduced to various functions, including purchasing and procurement, material receipt and storage, production, sales and distribution, and accounting-related activities.
The visit began with the necessary attendance and entry formalities, followed by a briefing on safety, discipline, and workplace protocols. The officials at the unit then explained the organisation’s operational and commercial processes, helping students understand how materials, information, documents, and finished products move through different stages of the organisation.
A significant part of the interaction focused on purchasing and procurement. Students learnt that procurement involves identifying requirements, evaluating suppliers, maintaining supporting documents, and coordinating the receipt of materials with stores and accounts. The discussion helped them understand how procurement decisions can influence cost, quality, production continuity, and working capital.
The students were also introduced to stores and inventory management. Through their observations and discussions, they understood the importance of proper storage, stock control, identification of materials, and documentation of material movement. This provided a practical connection to the inventory management concepts covered in their curriculum.
The production process further helped students understand how inputs are converted into finished products through coordinated activities involving materials, manpower, equipment, quality, and safety. The interaction also highlighted the connection between production and sales and distribution, showing how finished products ultimately move to the market and reach customers.
For the B.Com. students, the discussion on accounts and invoice processing was particularly relevant. They were introduced to the importance of verifying business documents, payment terms, and transaction details before processing invoices. The students also learnt about the Goods Receipt Note (GRN) and its role in connecting procurement, material receipt, inventory records, and subsequent invoice verification. These discussions highlighted the importance of documentation, accuracy, authorisation, and internal control in business operations.
Throughout the visit, students showed keen interest and actively engaged with the information provided. They also observed the importance of safety, hygiene, discipline, and compliance with workplace instructions. Students used protective head coverings and masks in operational and storage areas, as directed by the unit personnel.
The visit ultimately demonstrated that purchasing, inventory, production, sales, and accounts cannot function in isolation. Their coordination is essential for efficient business operations and financial control.
The industrial visit concluded as a meaningful experiential learning exercise, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical business processes.
