The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised a visit to the Governor’s House (Lok Bhavan), Kolkata, on 14th August 2026, for 40 students from B.Com., BBA and B.A., accompanied by three faculty members. The visit provided students with an opportunity to explore the exhibition “Celebrating Freedom Through Bengal” and engage with historical documents, photographs and artefacts connected to Bengal’s contribution to India’s freedom movement.

The exhibition offered a glimpse into the political, social and cultural history of Bengal during the struggle for independence. One of the most significant aspects of the exhibition was its collection of handwritten letters and archival documents associated with prominent personalities, including Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Seeing these writings and personal documents gave students a closer look at the thoughts, ideas and aspirations of some of the most influential figures of the period.

The exhibition also featured documents, photographs and other materials connected with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and several other important personalities of the freedom movement. These exhibits helped students understand the different individuals and events that contributed to the larger movement for independence.

Another interesting section displayed historical financial and postal artefacts. Old cheque books, bank documents, currencies, coins, stamps and other archival materials offered insights into the way financial institutions, communication systems and everyday economic life evolved during the period. For students, these exhibits also provided an interesting connection between history and areas such as commerce, banking and economics.

The display of historic newspapers and periodicals, including editions of The Statesman, added another dimension to the visit. The newspapers gave students an opportunity to see how major events were recorded and presented to the public at different points in history. Along with these, photographs, letters and other archival materials connected with freedom fighters and historical figures further enriched the exhibition.

The visit also allowed students to move beyond textbook-based learning and engage directly with historical evidence. The rare documents and artefacts helped bring various aspects of the freedom movement to life and provided a better understanding of Bengal’s role in India’s journey towards independence.

Overall, the visit to the Governor’s House proved to be an informative and enriching experience for the students. “Celebrating Freedom Through Bengal” not only highlighted the contribution of Bengal to the freedom movement but also encouraged students to appreciate the importance of preserving historical records and learning from the past. The experience successfully combined academic learning with firsthand exposure to history and archival material.
