The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised a Theatre Workshop on 10th August 2026 at the Concept Hall from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. The two-hour workshop witnessed the participation of around 50 students, bringing together those interested in theatre, acting and performance. The session aimed to give participants a closer understanding of theatre as an art form while providing them with an opportunity to learn directly from an experienced professional.
The workshop was conducted by Mr. Suprovo Tagore, a professional theatre director, producer and actor. Hailing from the Tagore family, Mr. Tagore has been associated with theatre from a very young age. He went on to become one of the prominent faces of Kolkata’s youth and alternative theatre movement during the 2010s. His experience in different aspects of theatre made the workshop an opportunity for students to gain insights beyond what is usually discussed in classrooms.
The session began with an introduction to theatre and the importance of performance as a form of expression. Mr. Tagore interacted with the students and spoke about the different aspects that come together to create an effective theatrical performance. The workshop encouraged participants to look at theatre not simply as acting on a stage, but as a combination of expression, communication, movement, observation and storytelling.
A major focus of the session was the practical side of theatre. Students were encouraged to participate rather than simply listen to a lecture. The interactive nature of the workshop created an open environment where participants could engage with the ideas being discussed and understand how performers approach a character and a scene. The session also highlighted the importance of confidence and spontaneity, especially when working in a live performance environment where actors have to respond to situations in real time.
Mr. Tagore also shared insights from his own journey in theatre and his experiences as part of Kolkata’s alternative theatre movement. His experiences helped students understand that theatre involves continuous learning and experimentation. The discussion also gave participants a glimpse into the dedication and discipline required to build a career in the performing arts.
The workshop proved particularly useful for students who already have an interest in theatre, while also introducing newcomers to the possibilities offered by the performing arts. Interacting with an experienced theatre professional allowed students to ask questions, exchange ideas and gain a better understanding of the field.
The two-hour session concluded on an engaging note, with students leaving with a greater appreciation for theatre and the effort that goes into creating a performance. The workshop successfully provided a platform for students to explore their creativity, build confidence and understand theatre from a more practical perspective. Through the experience and guidance of Mr. Suprovo Tagore, the session added a valuable dimension to the college’s efforts to encourage students to explore art, performance and creative expression.
