The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised a student development program featuring a seminar on Leadership and Team Building on 17th September 2026 at Jubilee Hall as part of the Event Management Workshop for Umang 2026. The session was attended by around 300 students from all four years and focused on leadership, communication, adaptability, and effective teamwork.
The session was conducted by Dr. Vijay Lakshmi Singh, Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Through an interactive discussion, she introduced students to different approaches to leadership and explained how leadership has evolved in modern organisations. She particularly focused on contemporary and hybrid leadership, where individuals are expected to adapt their approach according to changing situations and the people they work with.
Dr. Singh highlighted that leadership is not limited to giving instructions or making decisions. Effective leaders also need to communicate clearly, listen to others, and create an environment where team members feel comfortable contributing their ideas. These qualities become especially important when several people are working towards a common goal.

A significant part of the session focused on team building and coordination. With students preparing for Umang 2026, the discussion was closely connected to the practical challenges of organising a large college fest. Dr. Singh explained how clearly defined responsibilities, mutual trust, and effective communication can help teams work more efficiently.
To explain these ideas through real-world examples, Dr. Singh referred to Google’s Project Aristotle, which studied the characteristics of effective teams. The example demonstrated that a successful team is not simply a collection of highly talented individuals, but one in which members communicate well, respect each other, and feel comfortable sharing their opinions.
She also discussed Satya Nadella’s growth mindset at Microsoft, using it to highlight the importance of learning, adaptability, and openness to change. Students were encouraged to look at mistakes and challenges as opportunities to improve rather than as setbacks.
The seminar also introduced the concept of emotional intelligence. Dr. Singh explained how being aware of one’s own emotions and understanding the emotions of others can influence communication and teamwork. Empathy, self-awareness, and the ability to respond calmly were discussed as useful qualities for anyone working in a team.

Another important topic was situational leadership. Students were encouraged to understand that there is no single leadership style suitable for every situation. A good leader may need to change their approach depending on the circumstances, the nature of the task, and the people involved.
Towards the end of the session, Dr. Singh shared key takeaways and encouraged students to create a personal leadership action plan. This gave them an opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and identify areas where they could improve. The session was followed by an interactive question-and-answer segment, during which students raised their doubts and discussed situations related to leadership, teamwork, and event management.
The seminar concluded on an engaging note, providing students with practical insights into leadership and collaboration. Rather than presenting leadership as simply a position of authority, the session encouraged students to view it as a combination of communication, responsibility, adaptability, and understanding. The lessons from the seminar can be applied not only while organising Umang 2026, but also in students’ academic, professional, and everyday lives.
