As part of Anti-Ragging Week, The Bhawanipur Education Society College organised its Annual Debate on 11th August 2026 at the Concept Hall. The event commenced at 10:30 a.m. and witnessed the participation of more than 40 speakers, making it an engaging and thought-provoking session. The debate provided students with a platform to express their views, challenge existing ideas, and engage in a meaningful discussion on the issue of ragging and bullying. The debate centred around the motion, “This House believes that ‘playful’ bullying and ‘harmless’ teasing is a myth and is equivalent to ragging and should be punishable.” The session was judged by Debapriya Mukherjee, who observed the arguments and responses put forward by the participating speakers.
The main objective of the debate was to reinforce the message of Anti-Ragging Week by encouraging students to look more closely at behaviours that are often dismissed as harmless. The discussion focused on the distinction between casual teasing and behaviour that can cause discomfort, humiliation or emotional harm. It also encouraged students to question the normalisation of bullying and ragging in social and educational spaces. The speakers presented arguments from different perspectives, allowing the audience to hear contrasting opinions on whether playful bullying and teasing should be treated on the same level as ragging. The exchange of ideas led to several interesting points about individual boundaries, intent, consequences and the responsibility students have towards one another.
The interactive nature of the debate kept the session engaging throughout. Participants had to present not only their own arguments but also respond to opposing viewpoints, making the event a test of their communication, reasoning and ability to think on their feet. The presence of more than 40 speakers also brought a wide variety of opinions to the discussion. Beyond the competitive aspect, the debate encouraged students to reflect on how seemingly minor actions can affect others. It highlighted the importance of recognising behaviour that may be uncomfortable or harmful instead of simply labelling it as “fun” or “harmless.” The discussion also reinforced the need for a college environment where students feel respected and safe.
The Annual Debate concluded on a positive note, with enthusiastic participation and a strong exchange of perspectives. The event successfully contributed to the objectives of Anti-Ragging Week by creating awareness of bullying and ragging while encouraging students to speak openly about the issue. More than just a debate, the session provided an opportunity for students to question commonly accepted ideas, understand different viewpoints, and recognise the importance of respect, empathy and accountability in maintaining a healthy campus environment.
