Objective of the Event:
The programme was organised on the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer with the objective of creating awareness among students about contemporary environmental challenges and their possible solutions. The session also aimed to explore the relationship between indigenous knowledge, communities, ecology and the environment.
Brief Description of the Event:
The Department of Geography and the Environmental Development Committee, in collaboration with the IQAC, organised a panel discussion on 15 September 2026 on the theme Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Solutions.
The first panelist spoke about rivers, water conservation and their importance, with particular emphasis on how traditional knowledge systems valued the conservation and sustainable use of water resources. The second panelist focused primarily on the lived experiences of the Sundarbans, discussing its demography, the livelihoods of its inhabitants since the colonial period, and the various threats and vulnerabilities that shape everyday life in the region. The session witnessed active participation from students and faculty members.
Outcome of the Event:
The programme promoted greater awareness among students about environmental issues and encouraged them to understand environmental challenges from social, historical and ecological perspectives. It also helped them appreciate the significance of traditional knowledge in addressing contemporary environmental concerns.
