Songs express our feeling vocally but its counterpart in no less, if not better. Dancing so in order to express emotions is the rawest form of communication. Therefore to bring some raw potent energy to the Umang’14 stage, a western dance competition was held to end the day as it started- exhilaratingly. The experts on the judging panel were Mr. Anuj Parekh, Mr. Amit Shaw and Mr. Dorothi Shaw. Twenty-one teams brought forward their routines which were an assemblage of various dance forms, hip-hop in general prevailing over others. If one was tired after the multitudinous events of the day, it is certain that after watching these performances, they were more energized than when they came.
Stress Interview, the event that instantly reminds us of Roadies and Raghu. Yes, the 30 participants from 15 different colleges who had enrolled to participate went through a stress check. Cries, laughter, anger, disappointments and endlessly synonymous emotions welled through the 2nd floor auditorium from 3.30 pm onwards as Mr. G. Jayshankar, the judge of the event questioned one and all to which all the participants responded to the best of their satisfaction. But some were better at handling the stress than the others and hence AMALA HALDER HOLDING 1ST position, SK SHARIQUE ALI with 2nd position and SANJUKTA SARKAR with 3rd position were declared as the winners. All the participants gained different kind of experiences and learnt ways to control their stress.
Now was the time for the solo classical dance competition; the judge for the event was Mrs.Urmila Bhaumik, a renowned Bharatnatyam and Odissi dancer. This event consisted of ten dancers that danced on different classical forms of dance like Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Gaudiya, Kathak and semi classical. This event was held on the main stage of Umang. The rules of this event were 2+1mins, and props were allowed too.
On 19th December, 2014, Sketching was held at 1st floor Valia hall. The judge of this event was Dr. Somsankar Roy. They got 1hr 30 minutes to complete their sketching. The event was hosted by Vishal Patel. There were 10 participants from various colleges. The topic was disclosed to them in the spot. The participants focused mainly on the recent Peshawar attack, the angel trying to destroy the demon and they stuck to the theme, “Angels Vs Demons.” Each and every participant shone in exhibiting their creative skills in the form of sketching.
Umang 2014 hosted the event 99 secs to fame which was judged by anchor and actor Vineet Jain and model Sneha Ghosh. There were 23 participants participating in the event took place at the main stage.
The question of the millennium… a matter of superiority… Angels or Demons? This has long been left unanswered, but fortunately we have a way to find out. The Bhawanipur College’s fest i.e. UMANG’14: ANGELS vs. DEMONS has provided the conflicting sides a battlefield to finally prove their mettle. Fifty events will be held to draw out the true victors. We do not know which side will in the end prevail but we can assert ourselves that this battle will be legendary and more importantly exciting to judge and witness.
The Departments of English and History, The Bhawanipur Education Society College, in collaboration with the Department of English, University of Calcutta, presented a two-day International Seminar on “Revisiting the World Wars: Historical and Cultural Representations” on the 16th & 17th December, 2014.
